Get your lawn ready for spring with a few easy steps. Whether you are a do-it-yourself kind of person or want to give us a call to handle it for you, you can count on Jaques Lawn Care to help.
Get Rid of the Yard Waste
The first thing you want to do is clean up winter debris. Begin by removing leaves, twigs, and other debris that have accumulated over the winter months. This cleanup will have three incredible results. First, It will make your lawn look better. Second, it will prevent the buildup of thatch, the layer of dead grass that can impede water absorption. Lastly, it will make you feel better to have it done.
Test and Amend Your Soil
Soil testing is a service we offer at Jaques Lawn Care that can tell us and you a lot about the state of your lawn. You can do one yourself or you can have us come out and take a sample, analyze the results, and come up with a plan to restore the pH of your soil and nutrient levels required for a healthy lawn.
Aerate Compacted Soil
Aeration is often done in the spring or fall to encourage healthy lawns and often done in conjunction with overseeding, but more on that in a bit. When your lawn is aerated, it results in small holes that are able to allow air, water, nutrients, and new grass seed to reach the grassroots and help your lawn thrive. Aeration is typically recommended once a year, but can be stretched if your lawn is not receiving a lot of foot traffic (for example, kids playing in the backyard, a temporary pool that moves around throughout the summer, or numerous other activities). If you fall into the category of heavy foot traffic, even in just a few places of your yard, aeration is a vital component of a healthy lawn. We do not recommend aerating much past early spring, so if you are reading this after early April, put this item on your to-do list for early fall.
Overseed Bare or Thin Spots (or When You Aerate)
Spring is ideal for overseeding – literally putting grass seed over the top of your current grass to encourage a healthy, thick lawn. It is important to choose a grass that fits our climate type and your soil type. Be sure to water regularly to help the new seedlings take root.
Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicide
To prevent the germination of crabgrass and other annual weeds, apply a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring. Apply too early and it will not take, apply too late and it will be too late to prevent the already growing weeds. 55 degrees is the sweet spot, typically mid-March through mid-April!
